Is Orange Wine The New Rosé? @ WGBH

September 27 @ 6:30 pm 8:30 pm

When people ask what makes orange wine orange and rosé pink, the big question is: what makes any wine any color anyway?

Join BWS and our friends at GBH for a delicious night of wine, food & conversation to support the public radio you love. BWS grads, friends & family save $50 when you use promocode CHEERS at checkout!

Wine lovers don’t just taste and smell wine, we see it, too. And the harder we look, the less we see red wine versus white wine, and the more we see a rainbow of unique colors forming a fruity spectrum.

On one extreme there are silvery, water-colored white wines. On the other, there are inky opaque reds. Splashed across the middle is everyone’s summertime favorite — rosé — a light, fruity, floral pink made from some of the planet’s darkest red grapes.

New to the spectrum—and having a major moment right now—is orange wine, sometimes called amber or skin-contact wine. Orange wine is basically white grapes made in the red wine style: white grapes fermented with their skins, expressing totally new colors, less ripe fruit and unique earthy, nutty and herbal flavors.

Jonathon Alsop — author, GBH commentator and founder of the Boston Wine School — will be our guide for this comparative wine experience. You’ll taste a range of rosé and orange wines that represent the elements of these two important wine styles. Get ready to learn about wine, wine tasting, wine making and more on this unique tasting journey with other GBH supporters.

Callie Crossley — host of GBH News’ Under the Radar with Callie Crossley and Basic Black — will sample the delectable wines with you, offering commentary as she co-hosts this event with Jonathon Alsop.

We’ll have you speaking fluent Rosato in no time!

“Is Orange Wine The New Rosé?” is a Boston Wine School level 1 introductory course for beginners and enthusiasts. It assumes some exposure to wine but little formal or technical wine training. The curriculum is appropriate for wine lovers at every level.
